Day 3…”Center for Puppetry Arts” Part Three: “Fraggle Rock” Collection

Thursday, June 3rd, 2021

Before we get any further in this post, please know this is PART THREE of the “Center for Puppetry Arts” and even though you can read them separately, I don’t want you to miss out on the “Sesame Street” or “Muppet Show” sections before this- check them out HERE. Also, there will be more parts to follow that include Muppets from “Dark Crystal” and “Labyrinth.”

The year was 1983 and my little 9-year-old self-sat cross legged on the shag carpet as I held my breath to watch my first ever “Fraggle Rock” episode. Back then, HBO was simply a movie channel only, and on 2B located on the cable slider that sat on our huge console tv, it was almost forbidden to flip that black switch from “A” to “B.” For all the “decent” stuff, lets say, was found on “A.” PBS for example, my precious Sesame Street and Electric Company. I knew that when Mom and Dad were watching HBO, I can still see the beginning they had for it every time, it was a movie I usually wasn’t allowed to watch unless they okayed it.

Items from “Fraggle Rock”

All I had to hear was the “Duh duh duh duh duh duh duh duh…” (and if you didn’t sing that, go watch it) and I screamed with delight! I BELIEVED in Fraggle Rock; I BELIEVED this place existed. Somewhere under Doc and Sprocket’s shop laid this magical land where there was all play and singing and for some reason, I remember them loving to eat the Doozer construction pieces. Sweet or salty? The World needs to know! So, when I left the Muppet show section to almost walk right into THE Sprocket himself, the 9-year-old in me almost passed out. I just wanted to hug him SO BAD!! (Side note, this dog looks very similar to the dog in Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom, just saying.)

Sprocket, the first dog friend I ever had.

Right behind Sprocket were several Doozers, and I was GEEKING OUT! Yes, I realize I am in my 40s and probably should put child things away, but my heart, my mind, my soul, says “Hi Amy, it’s me, your childhood. Remember this?” Like a warm blanket, I just snuggled in the nostalgia, trying to not cry and seeing all of my friends in person. Remember, as a child, we thought these were real, these lands existed, these friends were just on the tv. And now, in that moment, it was amazing.

Oh those Gorgs…hated them as a kid!!

And the cherry on top, someone that I feel I am most like… there was Uncle Traveling Matt, Red, and Wembley. Probably the three that actually are the most like me- Uncle Traveling Matt and his postcards he sent to his nephew, Gobo, every week on is travels (Why I made my own postcard that you can see HERE), Wembley- my anxious side and Red, my fun and goofy side. Seeing them all there, it was just so exciting and writing this even now, I have THE biggest smile on my face. Never in my WILDEST dreams did I ever think I would meet my childhood friends, and there they were.

Uncle Traveling Matt, Wembley, and Red Fraggle

Stay tuned for two of my FAVORITE Muppet films of all time… “Dark Crystal” and “Labyrinth.” Because you remind me of the babe. What babe? The Babe with the power. What Power? Power of Voodoo? Who do? You do. Do What? Remind me of the babe!
