The Most Haunted City in Illinois… The Illinois Penitentiary
A piece of history that you would probably drive right by if you didn’t know was there, is the last remains of the Illinois State Penitentiary (Williams St and Broadway).
The Alton Prison opened in 1833 and closed in 1860, having had 11,700 Confederate souls pass through its gates. Many of them succumbed to dysentery, influenza, and small pox. 1,354 Confederate souls died from these conditions, and went on to be buried at the Confederate Cemetery in town.
This remaining wall was erected in 1973 as a reminder and a memorial to the Prison. It sits up on a small hill, with a parking lot that is located next to it. Nice signage here to read, and I did my Ghost App here and I got someone saying “freedom” and then “stand” after I sat from being tired. LOL
